The UJAAMA trio (in one of the African languages this word means "family") is a unique international musical project, consolidated musicians from different corners of the world. They met together with the help ot the internet and came together to record and perform in Holland, on the scenic island of Texel. The nature of this place really assists in composing and performing world music. Project participants: Ger Schafer (The Netherlands) - electric and acoustic guitars, bass, balaphon; Goro Noda (Japan) - acoustic guitars; Lavrenty Mganga (Russia) - flutes, percussion. During three weeks of stay, they recorded several hours of music and made about dozen of concerts. Especially successful was New Year's concert in the city of Emmen on 3rd of January 2003. Music of Ujaama can be compared with something like meditative group breathing practice - so important is dynamic and intonation movement as compared to tonal and modulation development. The base of the musical fabric are Goro Noda's guitar textures. He likes Ralph Towner and Keith Jarett very much. On this background, to develop and reveal the melodic aspect, the flute of Lavrenty Mganga arises. He likes Indian, Russian and Japanese traditional intonations very much. Finally, to amplify the colours, rythmical passages of the balaphon and "frippotronic" pads are added by Ger Schafer. He likes Frank Zappa and Gunter Hampel very much. On the whole, we have a very special cocktail, totally different from traditional free-jazz. Sometimes it resembles ECM recordings - the label that we all like very much :)
