This world fusion project has been created in 1997 in Voronezh as a trio, and continued its existence in Saint-Petersburg as a quartet. Voronezh line-up: Lavrenty Mganga - flutes, oboe, duduk, kornamuse; Andrei Konstantinov - trumpet, cornet, violin; Vladiswar Nadishana - percussion. Saint-Petersburg line-up: Lavrenty Mganga - flutes, oboe, duduk, kornamuse; Alexander Manotskov - cello, voice; Vladimir Doudko - clarinet, saxophone; Dmitry Grigoriev - percussion. The musical credo of the Ensemble RI is a concept of "archetypical music". According to the theory of archetypes, there are some common principles or modi of thinking that underlie developed cultures. This explains for the similarity of many traditions, developed independently of each other. Knowledge of these principles allows to experiment with composing music in the context both of existing traditions (even not being authentic bearer of) and "imaginary" ones, or to extrapolate to different stages of evolution of particular tradition. Therefore, music of Ensemble RI sometimes can resemble Balkan or Asian folklore, sometimes - medieval European dances, sometimes - contemporary chamber academic opuses, but in fact it does not belong to either. Because it is based not on the imitation but on the attempt to capture the essence of the musical process. Ensemble RI appeared on several international festivals, including Kukart in Saint-Petersburg and Art-Ark in Helsinki, Finland.
